Trolls figures in Norse mythology, often in connection with giants. For example, Hate or Mánagarm is called the "moon thief in troll form". Trolls lurk under bridges waiting to eat children, threaten hobbits in Middle-Earth, and invade the dungeons of Hogwarts. Often they are depicted as stupid. Trolls have a deep and murky literary history. Trolls haunt protagonists in Old Norse-Icelandic sagas. Trolls snatch gruff billygoats crossing bridges in grim fairy tales. In modern novels, trolls capture (and intend to eat) wandering dwarves and hobbits, and trolls sulk about in wizard’s dungeons, leaving a terrible stench wherever they go. Let us not forget, of course, trolls are also fluorescent-haired dolls with gems for bellybuttons.
A troll is a being in Nordic folklore, including Norse mythology. In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwell in isolated areas of rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings

Facts About Trolls If you Google trolls, at first you’ll come up with lots of websites about internet trolls, which are a different beast all together. The trolls being researched live in the mountainous regions or woodland regions of Norway. They’re known as mountain or woodland trolls.These days they are a shy creature and there is great debate as to their existence. Several places in Norway are named after trolls such as Trollfjorden, Trollveggen, Trollstigen.Trolls are huge and ugly. They’re scary but according to local lore they’re a little stupid, and a clever man or woman can use this to manipulate them.Trolls are one beast that a romantic woman should not attempt to kiss. She will not find a prince but rather a filthy creature with long, entangled hair. The troll is more likely to eat her than attempt to exchange a kiss.
It’s very difficult to discern reality from myth and legends, especially since there has been no documented sightings for some many years. Some people say trolls possess shape shifting powers, so perhaps this is why they’re so good at eluding people. Maybe your best friend is a troll in hiding. I understand trolls are mammals and they live to a great age – anywhere in the range between 1000 – 12000 years old. Like vampires, trolls have a bad reaction to sunlight. Younger trolls turn to stone while older trolls explode on exposure to sunlight.
Whenever you see electric pylons in Norway, especially in isolated mountainous regions, they’re probably not there for electricity but are electric fences used to keep trolls within their territories. Trolls are mostly seen on moonlit nights.
It’s very important not to make an enemy of a troll because they’re good at revenge. The best advice I can give is to keep in good standing with any trolls you might meet or you’ll be very sorry.
THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW: 1. The first troll in history was Norwegian and female. She appeared in a norsk skog (Norwegian wood) in the 800’s, challenging the Viking poet Bragi to a gammeldags (old-world) kind of rap battle. Bragi made the best dikt (poem), and was allowed to escape without the troll killing him…
2. Originally trolls existed only in Skandinavia. England had goblins and many other creatures, but no trolls. The Norwegian word troll entered English only after the folkeeventyr (folk or fairy stories) by Asbjørnen og Moe had been translated (19th century). The 3 Billy Goats Gruff (De tre bukkene Bruse), for example, was a huge hit, and the Norwegian trolls went viral in Britain and the US!
3. I middelalderen (in the Middle Ages), laws from Bergen and Oslo prohibited the ”awakening of trolls”. If you went ut i naturen (into Nature) to ”wake up” a troll, everybody knew you were the enemy of kirken (the Church). With such skills, at least, you could not be a normal menneske (human being).
THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO SAVE: Collection of troll dolls. Your personal diary of meeting and living with trolls...you could sell these stories to a mainstream publishing house or be erradicated in the middle of the night by a gang of trolls.
ZENTRAVELER SAYS: Internet trolls dont even get honorable mention compared to real trolls. Most of todays stories are boring compared to the middle ages where they had trolls, vampires, hobbits, goblins and more?
