LEARN HOW TO WALK

COME ON MAN I HAVE BEEN WALKING SINCE I WAS NINE MONTHS OLD WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY TEACH ME THAT I DONT KNOW?

When did men start walking? From at least 6 to 3 million years ago, early humans combined apelike and humanlike ways of moving around. Fossil bones record a gradual transition from climbing trees to walking upright on a regular basis.

Who was the first human walking on earth?

Homo sapiens, the first modern humans, evolved from their early hominid predecessors between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago. They developed a capacity for language about 50,000 years ago. The first modern humans began moving outside of Africa starting about 70,000-100,000 years ago.

Who invented walking and why? No One Invented Walking

It may be important to get this out of the way: walking wasn't invented. Not by anyone or anything. Walking is an innate thing that has existed since animals began living on land hundreds of millions of years ago. Scientists believe that arthropods were the first creatures to walk on land.

Welcome to Hominid Hunting’s new series “Becoming Human,” which will periodically examine the evolution of the major traits and behaviors that define humans, such as big brains, language, technology and art. Today, we look at the most fundamental human characteristic: walking upright.

Walking upright on two legs is the trait that defines the hominid lineage: Bipedalism separated the first hominids from the rest of the four-legged apes. It took a while for anthropologists to realize this. At the turn of the 20th century, scientists thought that big brains made hominids unique. This was a reasonable conclusion since the only known hominid fossils were of brainy species–Neanderthals and Homo erectus.

That thinking began to change in the 1920s when anatomist Raymond Dart discovered the skull known as the Taung Child in South Africa. Taung Child had a small brain, and many researchers thought the approximately three-million-year-old Taung was merely an ape. But one feature stood out as being human-like. The foramen magnum, the hole through which the spinal cord leaves the head, was positioned further forward under the skull than an ape’s, indicating that Taung held its head erect and therefore likely walked upright.

Numerous other explanations for bipedalism have been outright rejected, such as the idea that our ancestors needed to stand up to see over tall grass or to minimize the amount of the body exposed to the sun in a treeless savannah. Both ideas were debunked by the fact that the first hominids lived in at least partially wooded habitats.

OK... NOW THAT WE HAVE THE HISTORY OF WALKING WHY SHOULD WE LEARN HOW TO WALK?

Is it normal to walk heel first? Quick answer yes it is and most people walk this way.

It's no wonder humans are so set in our ways when it comes to walking heel-first — we've been doing it for a long time. Scientists know from footprints found preserved in volcanic ash in Latoli, Tanzania, that ancient hominins practiced heel-to-toe walking as early as 3.6 million years ago.

TOE STRIKE OR HEEL STRIKE — WHICH IS BETTER?

Few things are as exciting in life as seeing a child walk for the first time. Noticeably, toddlers tend to favor walking on their tiptoes or on the balls of their feet. This is due to the fact that their anatomy is not yet as developed as that of an adult.  According to OrthoInfo, most children begin walking on their heels around age two.

STILL CONFUSED AS MOST PEOPLE WALK USING THE HEEL STRIKE? Walking is more than just a personal mode of transportation. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), walking is the most popular aerobic physical activity, with more than 145 million adults including it as a key part of their active lifestyle.

With all of those steps being racked up, you’d think we all are doing it correctly. Well, we are here to tell you that you might be walking the wrong way — and it definitely matters.

“We must make sure that we strike the ground with our heel first; this aids in absorbing the shock impact through our other joints, mainly the knee,” Dr. Gleiber explains. “When we strike the ground with our knees in a slight degree of flexion, a healthy meniscus can properly absorb this shock. If we strike the ground with the midfoot — in a slapped gait pattern — we are transmitting excessive force through our lower extremity joints and placing them at risk for injury.”

It seems backwards to most of us, but indigenous tribes know that walking silently means walking toe to heel, not heel to toe. The native way of walking was to take smaller steps (no more than three feet or so) and place the toes on the ground first. The weight of the body should rest on the back leg. This allows you to check the noise value of the ground you are about to step on. This way, if there is a twig hidden under leaves, you will feel it with your toes before it makes much of a sound. This enables you to change your footing, if needed.

This is the exact opposite to how most of us walk, and it will take some practice if you wish to change from walking on the heel to walking on the toe. Practice on a wide range of surfaces.

We know this is a lot to consider all the way from your head down to your toes for an activity we do everyday without much thought. However, by taking just a few minutes each day to be aware of your posture and work toward making any corrections needed, you can keep your body healthy and mobile.

WHAT IS A HUMANS NORMAL GAIT? Human gait may be define as “ the translatory progression of the human body as a whole, produced by coordinated, rotatory movements of the body segments” is known as gait or human locomotion.  Gait is the medical term to describe human locomotion, or the way that we walk.  Every individual has a unique gait pattern.  In order to learn how to walk maybe you walk pigeontoed, duck footed, goose step landing on heel or waddle side to side (trendelenburg) or you walk just fine and dont need this lesson on walking.

IN CONCLUSION:  Walking on the toe or heel is totally up to you.  Make sure you have good walking sport shoes with good postures and begin walking? Thank God there is Zentraveler and a You Tube Video showing us how to walk! I was getting really hungry and I didnt know how to get to the kitchen. With my new walking skills I can just walk to the kitchen and grab some grub?
